Most laboratory power supplies (PSUs) offer a fixed maximum voltage and maximum current capacity. For example, a 35V/20A power supply can deliver up to 700W, but its power capacity is directly proportional to the output voltage, so if operated at 12V, for example, the maximum power is reduced to 240W. The TTi PowerFlex system uses a modified form of mixed-mode regulation to deliver higher current levels when the voltage is set to lower values. PowerFlex power supplies have a semi-constant or auto-ranging power characteristic, so the current capacity increases as the voltage decreases and they offer a nearly constant power output over a limited range. For example, the QPX1200 can deliver up to 60V or up to 50A within a total power limit of 1200W. This means that the maximum voltage and maximum current are not available simultaneously, and care must be taken when interpreting the specifications. While producing slightly higher noise levels than standard mixed-mode regulation, performance is still excellent. Both the CPX and QPX series utilize PowerFlex with linear post-regulation to provide wider output voltage and current capability with low noise.
